How to remove stains from carpets

Coffee
Sponge with soda water, blot dry and repeat until stain has gone.

Chewing gum
Place a plastic bag filled with ice cubes over the chewing gum to harden it. You may have to repeat the process several times. Use a little methylated spirit on  aclean cloth to remove any residue.

Candle wax
If the wax is soft, scrape up as much as you can with a spoon, then harden any that's left by putting a bag of ice cubes on the area. Pick the hardened wax from the carpet fibres. If any wax remains, put a pad of absorbent paper over the mark and iron with a warm iron until all of the grease has been absorbed.

Blood
Sponge the area with cold water or soda water and blot dry. Repeat the process if necessary. Shampoo the area with carpet shampoo.

Chocolate
Allow to set and scrape with a blunt knife. Apply carpet shampoo to the area and clean. Allow to dry, then vacuum.

Ballpoint pen ink
Gently dab with methylated spirits or a mixture of equal parts of milk and white vinegar. Shampoo the area.

Milk
Blot thoroughly, then shampoo the area with a carpet shampoo.

Ink stains
Blot with methylated spirit. Some ink stains can be removed using carpet shampoo. Unfortunately, some ink stains are virtually impossible to remove.

Egg
Remove any egg from the surface, then sponge with cold salty water. Shampoo the area using carpet shampoo.

Curry
Spray soda water on the stain. Dry with a folded towel, then sponge with a solution of one cup of wine vinegar and two cups of water. Dry thoroughly. If the stain remains you may need to call a professional carpet cleaner.

Crayon
Cover the stain with a piece of brown paper and iron over to lift off as much oil as possible. Clean the area with a pad dampened with a little white spirit to remove any traces of crayon dye.

Fruit stains
Sprinkle soda water over the stain, then blot with a towel to absorb as much water as possible. Repeat until the stain has disappeared.

Fats (oil, butter, margarine)
Cover the spot with talcum powder. Leave for a few hours and then vacuum. If traces of the satin remain, sprinkle a few drops of eucalyptus oil onto a clean cloth and dabb the stain.

Mud
Allow to dry. Vacuum. If a stain remains, shampoo the area.

Plasticine
Scrape off as much of the plasticine as possible and dab any remaining stain using white spirit on a cloth.

Tar
Scrape off as much as possible. Apply a glycerine solution on the stain and leave for about an hour. Rinse with cold water. Shampoo the area using carpet shampoo.

Red wine
Blot the area with a pad of towel. Pour soda water or white wine and blot immediately to remove as much liquid as possible. Repeat until the stain is removed. Blot dry. Then wash with carpet shampoo.
