Sun Dos and Donts

  • Do remember the UV rays are far more powerful closest to the equator where you will require a higher level of protection
  • Do choose a water-resistant formula if you are going to be near the water, and reapply once you are out of the water.
  • Do avoid, whenever possible, going out in the sun between 11am and 3pm, especially during the summer months. This is when the sun is directly overhead and UV rays have a direct path down to the earth.
  • Do choose a sun product that contains both UVA and UVB sunscreens.
  • Do apply sun lotion generously at least half an hour before you go into the sun and, once in the sun, don't forget to reapply every few hours. Use twice as much sunscreen as you would a body lotion.
  • Do remember that the face always displays the first signs of ageing, so give it extra protection. Use a higher SPF product than on the body. Ear a hat with a wide brim. Consider wearing a light sunscreen year round to offer complete protection.
  • Do pay attention to vulnerable or exposed parts of the body, not just the ears and nose, but the collarbone, shoulderbone, tops of feet, breasts, nipples, shins and back of knees.
  • Don't over do it. Restricting yourself to 10-15 minutes of sun exposure on the first day of a holiday is a wise move. If you must tan, build up the skin's tolerance to the sun in steps.
  • Don't forget that reflective surfaces like water and snow, can increase the amount of UV rays penetrating the skin, so, protect yourself accordingly.
